99% mobile phones made in India today: Vaishnaw – Technology News

Over 99% of mobile phones used in the country today are manufactured locally, while the mobile manufacturing industry has crossed $44 billion in value, communications and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday.

Speaking during his first visit to Tata Group’s iPhone plant in Hosur, the minister said that electronics manufacturing has today crossed the $100-billion mark. He said that not only have volumes increased, but India has been climbing up the value chain as currently multiple components are also manufactured in the country.

The Tata Group had last month acquired Taiwan based, Wistron’s plant which manufactures iPhone for around $125 million.

“We have reached in last nine years a level where we can have export led growth in electronics and products. Every employee of this complex industry has contributed,” Vaishnaw said. “There has been super progress in our semiconductor programme… Construction of plant to make chips is going very well. Some famous people who want to criticise the growth of mobile phones in industry forget the employment it generates,” he added.
