This week’s leaderboard looks a lot like last week’s. Frenchman Matthieu Pavon is solo third at the Pebble Beach Pro Am after winning the Farmers Insurance Open last weekend at Torrey Pines. At 7 under, he’s just behind Thomas Detry (-9) and Patrick Cantlay (-8), both of whom were also around the top of the leaderboard at times on Thursday at Torrey Pines.
There are a few more big-time players to contend with this week, though. Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Rickie Fowler, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg, Tommy Fleetwood and Max Homa are all in the top 15 after Round 1 and will be set on catching Cantlay, Detry and Pavon over the next 54 holes.
Thursday was eventful, and Friday should be more of the same. With the best field of the year to date, Pebble Beach is finally getting a group of players worthy of its stature in the game. As a result, we got some incredible play in the opening round — along with some world class views — and a top-notch leaderboard in the middle of the round that should continue to fill out as the week wears on.
