The last time a PGA Tour event was shortened to 54 holes was in 2016 when Brian Stuard won the Zurich Classic in a playoff over Jamie Lovemark and Ben An. That could be on the table for this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which has been postponed to Monday because of wind and rain in Monterey.
This is the third time in the last six Pebble Beach Pro-Ams that a Monday finish has been required. It also happened in 2019 and a year ago when Justin Rose beat Brandon Wu and Brendan Todd. After shooting a course record 60 on Saturday, Wyndham Clark currently leads at 17 under. He’s one shot up on Ludvig Aberg and two on Matthieu Pavon.
Technically, Clark could be declared the champion of the tournament if the PGA Tour is unable to complete play on Monday.
“Our regulation states that we can’t start play on Monday without knowing that we could finish play on Monday,” said PGA Tour rules official Gary Young on Saturday. “If we did that, and then for some reason weather rolled in on us that caused us to delay again, if more than half the field has finished play, then we would extend play into Tuesday. But we would need more than half of them to have completed their round on Monday.”
The weather forecast for Pebble Beach on Monday — when players will tee off starting at 11 a.m. ET — is not good. Rain and wind are expected, although the wind is expected to subside substantially from what we saw on Sunday (which was chaotic).
Everything is still a bit ambiguous, although obviously the plan is to try to get this event finished on Monday afternoon after 72 holes of play from everyone. Pebble Beach is the first big signature event of 2024 for the PGA Tour. The Sentry at the beginning of January was also a signature event, but its field size was smaller than the 80 golfers playing for $20 million at Pebble.
