JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A funeral home is being given a new use and an apartment complex is expected to break ground soon in downtown Jackson.

Dawn Foods acquires nearly 200-year-old baking manufacturer in The Netherlands
Dawn Foods, a Jackson-based global bakery supplier, acquired another bakery manufacturer in The Netherlands.
The acquisition includes family-owned bakery ingredients manufacturer Royal Steensma, a company headquartered in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. Royal Steensma has been active in the bakery market for almost 185 years, officials said.
The deal between Dawn Foods and Royal Steensma closed on Jan. 31 and will further expand Dawn Food’s manufacturing capability and strengthen its mission to provide customers with their baking solutions and business goals, officials said.
Jackson YMCA celebrates overcoming challenges to break ground on upgraded facility
Dozens of YMCA staff, members and Jackson officials gathered inside the Jackson YMCA 127 W. Wesley St., on Thursday, Feb. 8, to celebrate the official groundbreaking on a $25-million project whose fundraising began in 2017.
It’s been a challenge to get to this point, with setbacks and obstacles occurring since fundraising began due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 and subsequent rising construction costs.
However, continued support from investors, volunteers and the Jackson community, along with having the right team in place, kept YMCA staff motivated and committed to the goal of creating a better space, Jackson YMCA CEO Shawna Tello said.
“It almost doesn’t seem real. It’s been a long journey,” Tello said. “There have been challenges along the way that you would have never imagined we would come up against with COVID-19.
There’s no end to the double smash burger options at RJ’s Metropolitan Ice Cream Co.
RJ’s Metropolitan Ice Cream Co. is more than just a place to grab a milkshake or sundae.
The ice cream shop in downtown Jackson is not just known for its cold treats, but also, it’s create-your-own burgers. These smash patty burgers start as doubles, and from there, customers can add whatever toppings they want, co-owner Robert Wilkie said.
“That’s very important to us, just trying to stay creative on the burger side of things,” Wilkie said.
Helping Black-owned businesses thrive is goal of this Jackson organization
Isaiahs Hub Youth Center has always been focused on the development of young people in the community, and with the help of a local organization, they will get to further these efforts.
The 2024 Jackson’s Black Excellence Awards & Banquet’s Community Revitalization Project Award was granted on Saturday, Feb. 10, to the youth center, 730 Tomlinson St., so it can offer culinary programs and provide event caterers with a renovated kitchen.
“We were very grateful to be the recipients of the revitalization project,” Executive Director John Willis III said. “In the summer, the kids would get together, and we would pray about things that we were hoping to receive. What The Black Excellence did was answer a major prayer for the youth in that area.”
Alvin Glick Foundation donates $5M to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital for healthcare scholarships
During the last few days of his life, Jackson-based Alro Steel founder Al Glick spent his time under the care of the staff at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital.
He used his time in the hospital engaging with visitors and staff, asking them about their lives, schooling and work experience. He also learned from them about some of the staffing challenges across the medical profession, officials said.
These experiences moved Glick to direct Alro Steel and the Alvin Glick Foundation staff to create a positive impact on healthcare in Jackson via a record-setting $5 million endowment gift it awarded to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital that was announced Wednesday, Feb. 14.
The Greenwood housing development has plans to break ground this spring in Jackson
Another housing development coming to downtown Jackson is expected to break ground soon.
Ohio-based company Pivotal are planning to break ground this spring on the Greenwood apartment building, Pivotal’s Midwest Region’s Senior Vice President of Development Pete Schwiegeraht said.
Plans for the Greenwood were first announced to take shape in the Partnership Park residential neighborhood on Greenwood Avenue in March of 2022. Pivotal is proposing to build the three-story housing development, which will be comprised of 51-units of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.
This former Jackson funeral home is being transformed into an event space
it was once a place that honored the deceased, but it will soon become a place of celebration.
The former Wetherby Funeral Home, 402 W. Michigan Ave., recently was purchased by mother-daughter duo Laura Schlecte and Jacqueline Austin. The two are working to transform the historic building into a new event center for future residents’ celebrations.
The historic building is estimated to have been built in the 1890s and was used as a residential mansion. In 1923, it was turned into Wetherby Funeral Home, which remained that way until Schlecte and Austin purchased the building in 2022 to transform it into The Theodore Event Center, Austin said.
