ELKINS — Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco has signed a proclamation declaring today Small Business Saturday in town.

“Our local small businesses are not just the backbone of our economy; they are the heart of our community,” Marco said. “They create jobs, drive innovation, and foster a sense of belonging among our residents.

“To every business owner who sees the potential in Elkins and acts on it, your belief and investment in our city are invaluable,” he said. “Your endeavors are laying the groundwork of growth for a thriving and prosperous community.”

Small Business Saturday celebrates the integral role of local small businesses in the city and across the country.

“This proclamation reinforces Elkins’ commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs and highlights the importance of small businesses in maintaining the city’s unique character and vitality,” a City of Elkins press release states. “The mayor encourages all residents of Elkins, as well as communities nationwide, to show their support by shopping at local businesses on Small Business Saturday and to Shop Small throughout the year.”

Small Business Saturday was founded in 2010 and is an important part of small businesses’ busiest shopping season, officials said. The day was created to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for communities.

A downtown Elkins business owner also voiced support for Small Business Saturday.

“Small Business Saturday is always a great day for people to support our local businesses,” Kathy’s Decorating and Design owner Kathy Vance told The Inter-Mountain Friday. “We are doing a 20% off sale for it and we encourage everyone to come out and patronize all the small businesses that are the backbone of our community.”
