CHARLESTON — The Oak Glen volleyball team is one win away from a state title.

The Golden Bears, who are the top-seed in the Class AA field, won their state tournament opener on Wednesday over No. 8 seed Weir High in three sets in what was a rematch of Saturday’s Region 1 Championship, then defeated Herbert Hoover, also in three sets, in the state semifinals later in the day to earn a spot in today’s state championship match.

“(The final) will be a battle no matter who we play,” Oak Glen head coach Morgan Saddler said. “We will trust in what we do and who we are. We are ready. I am very proud of our girls and the way they battle for each other.”

In the win over Weir High, which Oak Glen won by scores of 25-13, 25-16, 25-13, Ashlyn Six registered 14 kills, McKenzi Martin tallied 11 kills, Averi Martin and Brooklyn Six each finished with five kills, Reecelyn Craig recorded four kills, Jersey Smith had 30 assists and eight digs and Addison Smith recorded nine digs.

It was the fifth time this season the Golden Bears topped their Hancock County rivals.

In winning the semifinal by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-23, McKenzie Martin tallied 20 kills, Ashlyn Six finished with 15 kills, Averi Martin tallied eight kills, Jersey Smith had 44 assists, Addison Smith recorded 12 digs and Tia Vick finished with 10 digs.

No. 3 seed Philip Barbour defeated Shady Spring on Wednesday night in the other semifinal.

The Golden Bears and Colts are set to battle for the state title at 11 a.m. inside the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

The Golden Bears won a regular season meeting, 2-0, during a tri-match in September.
