LISBON — An anonymous Lisbon David Anderson High School Class of 1956 graduate is challenging fellow classmates to donate toward a scholarship, offering to match whatever they donate to bring the total up to $200,000.
“That’s a positive story I wanted to report,” David Anderson Jr./Sr. High School Principal Keith e said during Thursday’s school board meeting.
The donor put forth an initial $25,000 donation to set up a scholarship through the Lisbon Alumni Association and now wants other classmates to join in. According to Edenfield, the donor wants to stay anonymous for now.
He called the cold call he received about the donation offer something in the category of “out of the ordinary.”
According to Edenfield, the alumni association is trying to make this fun by dropping clues about the donor’s identity. When asked if it was just for that class, Edenfield said that was the idea, but that someone could donate in memory of a 1956 class member.
To make a donation, contact Edenfield at the high school or contact the alumni association.
In other money matters, Lisbon Schools Treasurer Jennifer Coldsnow spoke briefly about the latest five-year forecast, which board members approved, showing a positive cash balance all five years.
“I think overall we look a lot healthier than we have in the last couple years,” she said.
In fiscal year 2024, there’s a balance of $4.5 million that gradually goes down to $128,766 in the fifth year, fiscal year 2028. She explained that 74 percent of the revenue for the district comes from the state, with 26 percent from local. The district will see gradual increases come in slowly from the state and the real estate income has gone up due to the property values going up.
Both Edenfield and McKinley School Principal Dan Kemats announced Veterans Day events set for today, with the annual Veterans Day breakfast starting at 9 a.m. at McKinley and the high school program starting at 1:15 p.m.
The board also heard reports from Athletic Director Kyle Bing and maintenance supervisor Roger Tullis, with Bing noting the setting of 11 school records between the football and volleyball teams. He said the athletic department received a check for $4,600 for the last round of sponsorships for the scoreboard. Tullis said all the building roofs are being evaluated and they’re working on changing out the new chairs for the old ones at the high school.
He also touched on the issues with exterior lighting. Superintendent Joe Siefke said the estimated cost of an exterior lighting project, after rebates, totals $25,670, which he said will come from the safety grant.
In personnel matters, the board accepted the retirement effective Nov. 1 of elementary school teacher Natalie Lindesmith, with Siefke thanking her for her time. The board also issued a one-year limited certified contract to Rachel Gentile as an elementary art teacher. Kemats said she’s been with the district at McKinley since the beginning of the school year and “we’re excited to have her. She was also issued an academic supplemental contract for the McKinley Art Program while Dave Pancurak was issued one for pep band.
Also in personnel, the board approved Building Leadership Team members for McKinley and David Anderson Jr./Sr. High School with a pay of $100 per meeting, limited to no more than four meetings per year paid out of professional development funds. McKinley team members include: Melissa Kemats, Bethany Quetot, Dave Guy, Denise Keffer, Corey Rhodes, Becky McCullough, Karly Rudibaugh, Kristi Slagle, Gwen Weikart, Beth Devine, Beth Hiscox and Teresa Crawford. DAHS team members include: Lisa Baker, Teresa Crawford, Christine Chludzinski, Meredith Deichler, Linda D’Ippolito, Beth Hiscox, Janet Lane, Alex Walker, Lauren Glenn, Steve Hlaudy and Natalie Vantilburg. Board members T.K. Hiscox and Jim Smith both abstained.
Hiscox was named the Lisbon representative to the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center board for a three-year term through December 2027.
Athletic supplemental contracts were approved for the following basketball coaches: Rob Gregg, 7th grade girls; Ryan Brown, 8th grade girls; Tim Myers, 7th grade boys; Jamie Wise, 8th grade boys. David Toot and Danny Donohue were named weight room coordinators.
The board approved a contract with Hayes Lawn Care, Lisbon, for snow plowing and salting services for this school year.
Donations accepted were: $1,000 for the McKinley Principal’s fund and $1,000 for McKinley Make a Difference Day, both from First United Methodist Church of Lisbon; $150 to DAHS from R.L. Craig to benefit students through the PBIS program; and $6,600 from Darlene and Tom Blocksom (Class of 1970) toward unpaid student lunch accounts.
The next school board meeting will be 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at the school board office on North Market Street.
