Chargers vs. Jets final score, results: Los Angeles’ defense harasses Zach Wilson, New York en route to commanding win

The Jets are nothing if not resilient.

Gang Green was hailed as Super Bowl contenders heading into the season. One look at their roster and it’s pretty clear to see why. The defense is dripping with verve, from the front seven (perennial Pro Bowlers Quinnen Williams, C.J. Mosley) to the secondary (reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner, Jordan Whitehead). The offense, meanwhile, is blessed with speed, skill and the ability to mystify opposition tacklers. It seemed as if all the Jets needed was a conductor for their collection of disparate hymns to become a real orchestra.

That man was supposed to be Aaron Rodgers. In recent weeks, though, that responsibility has tended to fall on the shoulders of that menacing defense. And more often than not, Robert Saleh’s rearguard has come through.

New York stifled the Eagles en route to their first defeat of the year in Week 7. The Jets added another shutdown display against the Giants in Week 8. And although backup QB Zach Wilson hasn’t done much, he hasn’t needed to; the Jets are riding high at 4-3, having picked up three straight wins. Somehow, they’ve climbed into the thick of the AFC playoff race.

They’ll face quite the test in Week 9, dueling with Justin Herbert and the Chargers in the primetime slot of “Monday Night Football.” Herbert is one of the league’s true elites under center, billing he lived up to the last time he took the field under the bright lights. Last week, Herbert rattled off 16 straight completions vs. the Bears. He ended up totaling nearly 300 yards passing (and three touchdowns) to ward off his NFC North foe. And although the Bolts (3-4) haven’t looked their usual best at different points in the campaign, when you have Herbert, you have a chance.

It’s a clash of the titans at MetLife Stadium. And it should make for must-watch television, a stark departure from the great many primetime games to have taken place thus far.

End of fourth quarter: Chargers 27, Jets 6

11:01 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! And Ekeler confirms it with his second score of the affair. Game. Set. Match.

10:59 p.m.: FUMBLE! Khalil Mack gets in on the action as well, ripping the ball away from Wilson on the drop back. Gilman picks it up and takes it some 48 yards back to the end zone. This game is on ice.

10:57 p.m.: Jets have about four minutes left to make something shake. They might have to do so without Garrett Wilson, who limped off the field after fielding a nine-yard throw from his hurler.

10:53 p.m.: Kellen Moore and the Bolts opt to play things conservatively with the ball back and the clock waning. Three straight run plays prove unsuccessful. However, it keeps the clock running for when the Jets do retrieve possession. Even when the Chargers are bad, they’re good. At least in tonight’s game.

10:52 p.m.: The sacks continue to pile up for Wilson and the Jets. He’s dumped on the canvas once more, this time by Tuli Tuipuluto. That’s a 15-yard loss and that’s going to spawn yet another punt by New York. Yikes.

10:41 p.m.: Allen’s catch proves consequential, as Dicker struts back onto the field four plays later to bring the Bolts’ lead back to two touchdowns.

10:38 p.m.: Incredible snag by Allen to keep the drive alive. He twirls around on the vertical, pulling the ball in while spinning towards the turf. That catch takes him over 10,000 receiving yards — all of which have been picked up in Chargers blue. What a moment, what a career.

10:36 p.m.: Herbert calling on all his weapons to make plays. Just connected with Allen to pick up yet another first down, their third of the possession.

10:35 p.m.: The Bolts make New York pay! Herbert hits rookie Quentin Johnston, who steps just over the marker to nab the first down.

End of third quarter: Chargers 17, Jets 6

10:30 p.m.: Solomon Thomas cracks Herbert with a brutal backside hit. That sends the ball into the ether. But as has been the case time and time again for the Jets, the rub of the green goes against them: Herbert landed back on his pamphlet.

10:25 p.m.: Bosa again! Puts Wilson on his backside to halt yet another Jets foray into Chargers’ territory. That toe injury doesn’t look to be bothering him too much more nowadays.

10:22 p.m.: Another bit of magic keeps things going for New York. A direct snap lands straight into Hall’s path. He bursts through the middle to move the chains on fourth down. Perhaps a comeback is in the works? Hmm…

10:19 p.m.: Big call on third down. Looks like Conklin outmatched James in single coverage, prompting the Chargers safety to grab a chunk of his opposite number’s jersey. That will keep the drive churning away.

10:17 p.m.: Wilson^2 comes through once more. Wilson hits his namesake to pick up 13 yards and make things more manageable on third down. 

10:05 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! New York’s attack shows signs of life to kick off the second half. Wilson got the ball moving with a couple chunk plays to Garrett Wilson and Ty Conklin, respectively. And although the Bolts were bale to limit things with a pair of sacks at the end of the drive, Zuerlein trotted onto the field to sink yet another booming effort.

9:47 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Another bucket by Dicker, who sinks from 55 out to bring that Bolts lead back to 14 points.

9:46 p.m.: Allen pops up once more for the slant route. Dicker is streaming onto the field now for the longgggg attempt.

9:45 p.m.: Big gain by Keenan Allen brings the Chargers to the 46. They don’t need too much more yardage to get in Cameron Dicker range. 11 seconds left.

9:44 p.m.: Nothing really going on the following drive. The Bolts will get a chance to add to their lead before the end of the frame.

9:37 p.m.: New York’s defense continues to keep it in the game. Herbert has looked far more ordinary than he has tended to be at different points on the year, completing just eight of his 18 pass attempts. That will give Wilson and the Jets one last chance before the whistle goes for halftime.

9:32 p.m.: …Nevermind…Wilson get sent to the floor via sack. This offensive performance has been putrid from New York so far. And unless something changes, it will be headed to its fourth defeat of the year.

9:30 p.m.: Wilson moves the chains with a dart to Gipson. New York is slowly but surely making making its way down the field.

9:27 p.m.: New York holds strong once more, prompting a L.A. punt after batting a pair of Herbert efforts away. One more chance for the Jets’ offense to turn things up before the end of the first half.

9:20 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Greg Zuerlein continues his strong play with a 47-yard effort to open the scoring for the Jets.

9:17 p.m.: Hall has been a beacon of hope amid the toils for Jets fans. He just exploded through the trenches, jostling his way to 10 hard-earned yards. The elusive back has been a steady presence for New York thus far. That’s better than you can say about a lot of the Jets offensive options.

9:14 p.m.: John Franklin-Myers slams Herbert to the canvas, showcasing just what New York can do when its clicking. New York’s offense will get the ball back. It has to get things going sooner rather than later.

9:08 p.m.: The ball once again tumbles along the surface after Hall misplays Wilson’s toss. Fortunately (for Jets fans) it ended up in their grasp. But another punt is incoming. New York’s offense is spiraling.

End of first quarter: Chargers 14, Jets 0

8:58 p.m.: Gerald Everett makes some magic happen in the flat, discarding numerous Jets defenders to turn an apparent short-yard gain into a first down. Solid way to end the frame for the Bolts, who are firmly in the driver’s seat.

8:57 p.m.: The Jets just haven’t been able to find their footing. Another drive turns to ashes after Wilson’s throw strays wide.

8:45 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Austin Ekeler gets around the bend and races towards the pylon. He fell just short, but his effort was rewarded shortly thereafter; the Bolts found the end zone three plays later with a scamper through the mist.

8:47 p.m.: That’s how you do the dance, Joey.

8:43 p.m.: FUMBLE! Joey Bosa comes alive in the pocket, harassing Wilson before sending the ball spiraling with one fell swipe. He then picked up his loose change, the second straight change of possession in many drives for the Jets. Yikes.

8:40 p.m.: Been a bit of a mixed display from Wilson so far. Has tossed a few hospital passes to start things, but just split the defense with a delicate toss to Xavier Gipson. 19-yard gain will bring Gang Green inside L.A. territory.

8:36 p.m.: New York’s defense holds firm, limiting Los Angeles’ chances to force it into another punt. Offense has not been the name of the game thus far.

8:30 p.m.: FUMBLE! Just when the Jets looked like they were on the cusp of finding their groove, they give the ball away! Garrett Wilson has his catch and scamper upended as Alohi Gilman jars the ball loose. Derwin James scoops up the pickings, handing the ball back to the Bolts.

8:26 p.m.: The Jets will need Breece Hall to be on his game in this one. He showed flashes of his explosiveness, first bursting through the mire for six yards on first down, then picking up the first on a catch in the flat on third. He’s leading the league in yards per carry (5.7), so expect head coach Robert Saleh to feed us a heavy dose of Hall throughout this one.

8:22 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Bolts defense returns the favor on the ensuing drive, bringing about a Jets punt. Thomas Morestead booted his effort to Derius Davis, who proceeded to leave countless New York defenders in his wake en route to an 87-yard punt return. That’s one way to start things!

8:19 p.m.: New York’s defense flexes its strength, shutting Herbert and Co. down to prompt a four-play punt.

8:18 p.m.: The ball is kicked off and away we go! Justin Herbert and the Bolts spill onto the field to open the affair.

8:05 p.m.: Strong words from Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley, who is attempting to rally the troops ahead of tonight’s game.

7:50 p.m.: Here’s a look at the inactive lists for tonight’s game. Plenty of playmakers missing out on the action, namely wideout Allen Lazard.

7:40 p.m.: Racing royalty is on the scene at MetLife Stadium; the winners of the 2023 New York City Marathon — Kenya’s Hellen Obiri and Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola — are on the scene at East Rutherford. Hopefully they get to see a good one tonight.

6:20 p.m.: Aaron Rodgers’ citing here at MetLife Stadium. The gifted gunslinger pulled up to the Colosseum alone on Monday, ditching his trusty cart. He looks pretty fluid on the grass, as well, firing some arrows down the field during warmups. Could a return to the gridiron be on the horizon?
