TORONTO — A majority of voters in the Gem City supported a new levy for its recreational facilities while voters in the First Ward chose Clark Crago to represent them on City Council.

A total of 804 voters, or about 61.3 percent, voted for the replacement levy, which was adjusted to reflect current property values and is expected to generate $39,000 per year for five years for maintenance and improvements to the city’s parks, swimming pool and recreation center.

A total of 507 voters, or about 38.6 percent, voted against the levy.

All totals are unofficial until ballots are canvassed, according to the Jefferson County Board of Elections.

Toronto Council President Frank McEwen said, “We want to thank the citizens for their support. We really appreciate it. It will allow us to make improvements on anything in recreation.”

Clark Crago, a founder and longtime director of the TEMS Joint Ambulance District, emerged the winner in a race against Maureen Howard, whose community activities have included serving as secretary of the Jefferson County Democratic Party.

Bob Bertram, who currently holds the seat, chose not to seek re-election.

According to unofficial totals reported Tuesday night, Crago received 292 votes, or about 70 percent, while Howard received 125 votes, or about 29.9 percent.

Crago said, “I am honored the citizens of Toronto supported me and I will be there to support them.”

He also expressed thanks for family members and friends who supported him as he pursued the council seat.

Crago said he has been viewing council meetings through the internet to become aware of issues facing the city and looks forward to working with the other council members.

Several candidates for other council seats and city offices and seats on the Toronto school board were unopposed in the election.

The Jefferson County Board of Elections reported 1,363 voters of the city’s 3,509 registered voters turned out for the election.
