GOWANDA — Superintendent Dr. Robert Anderson delivered “the news that everybody has been waiting for” at a recent Gowanda Board of Education meeting.

The Gowanda Central School District pool is officially on its way to a full recovery. Construction for the emergency repair project began on Feb. 1.

The district only received one bid on the project, from Numarco, Inc. of Elma, back in November. The Board then approved the bid, in the amount of $292,000 as a base cost, upon the recommendation of Young and Wright Architectural, who is overseeing the project.

The district hopes to see substantial progress by the end of the school year, with the goal of the pool opening by the beginning in September in time for next school year.

Also at the recent meeting, Anderson gave his well wishes to a departing member of the district. Renee Bauer-Marzec submitted a letter of resignation for the purpose of retirement at the end of the school year. Her resignation was accepted by the Board of Education. Bauer-Marzec was a Special Education Teacher who spent the bulk of her career teaching at Gowanda for the past 24 years.

“It’s been a real pleasure to work with her for a number of years. All the best to her,” Anderson said.

The district also officially welcomed a wave of new employees, including Jacqueline Snyder, who was approved as Seneca Language Teacher. Snyder is contracted by the Seneca Nation of Indians through the 2023-24 school year.

Laura Fiorella was appointed as School Social Worker. Fiorella, a Gerry resident, is a State Licensed Social Worker with a provisional certificate as a School Social Worker. Fiorella received a Bachelor’s Degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia and a Master’s Degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Fiorella previously worked for the Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene.

Amber Pollinger was appointed as a Special Education Teacher. Pollinger, an Angola resident, is a graduate of the State University of New York at Fredonia. She holds initial certification in Students with Disabilities, Childhood Education Grades 1-6, and English to Speaker of Other Language. Pollinger previously taught at Northern Chautauqua Catholic School in Dunkirk as an AIS Mathematics Teacher and as an ENL Teacher at Jamestown Public Schools.

Also appointed by the district were: Corinne Hallin, Long Term Substitute Special Education Teacher; Mackenzie Alvira, Substitute Teacher, Teaching Assistant and Monitor; Makenzie Carroll, Substitute Teacher, Teaching Assistant and Monitor; and Michele Sprague, Substitute Teacher and Substitute Teaching Assistant. Zac Izard was appointed as Teacher Mentor for the year, as needed.

Two coaching positions were filled through the remainder of the school year, including Jonah Mohawk as a Varsity Boys Lacrosse assistant and Bryan Lucas Brawdy as Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, effective Jan. 9.

Substitute Teacher, Substitute Teaching Assistant, and Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Brandon Newell was terminated, effective Jan. 9.

The Board also accepted resignations from Katelynn Taber, Substitute Teacher and Substitute Teaching Assistant; Dakota Parks, Substitute Teacher and Substitute Teaching Assistant; and Robert Arendt, Cleaner.
