Avery Kirkham had 14 kills, five aces and 10 digs, and Lauren Brown added 13 kills, five aces and six blocks as the Maui Preparatory Academy girls volleyball team rallied to beat Waipahu in a five-set marathon in the first round of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division II State Championship on Tuesday night at the Kalani gym.
Na Pueo (12-3), the Maui Interscholastic League runners-up who are making their first appearance at the state tourney, pulled out the 16-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-23, 16-14 victory and advanced to face top-seeded Mid-Pacific tonight at 7 at Kalani.
Maui Prep forced the fifth set with a 4-1 run to end the fourth, getting the crucial points on a Kirkham kill and a block and a kill by Brown before the set ended on a Waipahu hitting error.
After falling behind 13-10 in the fifth, Na Pueo rallied to tie it up with three straight points on a service error and another kill and block by Brown.
The Marauders got to match point on a Pueo attack error, but Brown’s kill tied it back up at 14-14 before Kirkham’s final service ace and Brown’s final kill sent MPA to the next round.
Mayson Miles added four blocks, five digs and seven kills while hitting .500 for Na Pueo, which hit .080 compared to .074 by Waipahu. Sofia Mallari had 14 digs and two aces, Ashley Davis dished out 32 assists and Kelsey Reul recorded 17 digs.
MIL champion Seabury Hall, which got a bye into the quarterfinals as the No. 3 seed, faces University Lab today at 7 p.m. at Kaimuki.
MIL Division I champion Baldwin, the No. 4 seed, takes on Kapolei in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal tonight. The game will be televised on OC16.
