Tulane, SMU battle for AAC crown
No. 22 Tulane hosts SMU in the 2023 AAC Championship Game as the Green Wave look to take home the league title for a second consecutive season. Both teams went 8-0 in AAC play during the regular season to earn their place in the matchup. Tulane currently sits as the highest-ranked Group of Five team in the College Football Playoff Rankings, so a win Saturday would likely put the Green Wave in a New Year’s Six bowl game for a second straight season after defeating USC last January in the Cotton Bowl.
SMU, which leaves the AAC for the ACC in 2024, is looking to win an outright conference championship for the first time since the heart of the “Pony Express” era in 1982, which was also the last time the Mustangs won 11 or more games in a season. SMU can check off both of those boxes Saturday, but they’ll be without star quarterback Preston Stone, who suffered a broken leg in the team’s regular-season finale against Navy. The Mustangs now turn to redshirt freshman Kevin Jennings under center as they look to pull the upset and leave the AAC with some hardware.
