ARLINGTON, Texas — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are putting on a show in the 10-5 Dallas Cowboys‘ final regular season home game of the 2023 season, a prime-time Saturday showdown with the 11-4 Detroit Lions, the NFC North champions. Hall of Fame head coach Jimmy Johnson will finally be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor at halftime.
Dallas is out to a 7-3 lead after the first 30 minutes thanks to Prescott’s Houdini-like scrambling abilities and his connection with Lamb. Late first quarter with the Cowboys backed up on their own eight shortly after a Lions punt, it appeared as though the Dallas quarterback was going to be safety. Prescott bumped into two Detroit defenders while bottled up in a collapsing end zone pocket before dancing out to the right and uncorking a fadeaway jumper of a throw off his back foot to Lamb that fell right into his arms.
Lions cornerback Kindle Vildor fell to the ground as Lamb secured the pass, which resulted in a 92-yard touchdown. That catch for Lamb ties him with Michael Irvin for the most catches in a single season in Dallas Cowboys history with 111. The completion is the longest of Prescott’s career, the longest catch of Lamb’s career as well as the second-longest competition in Cowboys history. The only completion longer in team history is Hall of Famer Bob Hayes’ catching a 95-yard touchdown pass from Don Meredith in Washington in Week 10 of the 1966 season.
Lamb ended up breaking Irvin’s record with his third catch of the night and his 112th of the season, but the play also came with a downside for Dallas. He fumbled the ball out of the end zone for a touchback to give the Detroit Lions the ball right as the Cowboys were about to go up 14-3. He finished the half with 151 yards and a touchdown on six catches.
