This week brought an interesting array of business news, including an analysis into 2023 business trends, a feature on a pet-friendly new business, another feature on a West Texas artist whose works appeared on ‘Yellowstone,’ and several new openings.
The analysis, which appeared in print on Tuesday, looked into the trends and notable moments in the Lubbock business scene of 2023. There were about 111 openings and 43 closings, mostly in the food/drink-based businesses. This averaged into nine openings and four closings per month, though there were several months that did not follow that pattern.

Bernadette Hernandez, owner of Sweet Pup Co., discussed how her family went from making pet treats at home nearly 13 years ago, to opening their first storefront at 3532 34th St. on Jan. 6. Her father, a disabled Army veteran, is the head pet treat baker (with his own book of recipes), and she operates the pet-friendly bandanas side of the business.
“When I was 12 years old, I wanted to support the dogs that I was fostering, and I didn’t want to ask my parents for money,” said Bernadette Hernandez, owner of Sweet Pup Co. “So, I started making dog treats on my own. My dad helped me, day and night, making these dog treats, and we were known as the dog treat family.”
I spoke with Cassandra Coronado Everett, owner of Cenizo West and Cenizo Hatworks, about her business based in Sabinal. Her designs have appeared on the show, ‘Yellowstone,’ and in the wardrobes of Raul Malo, Faith Hill, and other recognizable figures in the music and television industries. During the interview, Everett talked about how it all began with a wax block and some dental tools.
“The thought process on that was to make something for me, that I wanted to wear,” Everett said. “I picked up a block of wax one day and some dental tools, and just started tinkering with that.”

Recent openings for this week included Kung Fu China Express, 5102 60th St., on Jan. 5; Bandana & Boujee, 1808 Clovis Road, on Jan. 6; and Sweet Pup Co., 3532 34th St., on Jan. 6.
