Frontier Airlines said Wednesday that it will be adding two new routes from New Orleans in May, one to Indianapolis, Indiana, and the other to Columbus, Ohio.

The new three-times-a-week flights will be new nonstop routes from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, raising the total number of direct flight destinations from the New Orleans airport to 55.

The Denver-based ultra-low-cost carrier said that the new Indianapolis direct flight will start May 21, with the Columbus flights starting the day after. They will both run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Frontier currently has five direct flights to and from New Orleans, according company spokesperson to Jennifer de la Cruz: Cleveland, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Denver and Raleigh-Durham.

The two new direct routes puts Frontier on par with United Airlines, which also flies seven nonstop flights from New Orleans, though United has a roster of about 60 departures per week from New Orleans compared to 12 for Frontier.

Frontier is promoting its two new routes with an initial offer of $19 each way for flights booked before midnight on March 1. There are various conditions attached with restrictions including certain travel dates.

The new direct flights out of New Orleans were among 17 new routes nationally that Frontier announced on Wednesday.

Frontier reported in early February that it lost $37 million last year, compared to a net profit of $40 million in 2022.

While passenger traffic at Louis Armstrong airport rose last year by 6.6%, to more than 6.2 million, Frontier saw its total number of passengers in New Orleans decline by more than 16% for the same period to just below 100,000.

Among the low-cost carriers operating from New Orleans, Breeze Airways, which specializes in connecting underserved destinations, saw its passenger traffic more than double last year, to about 118,000 passengers.
