Raising Cane’s opens first franchise in nation’s capital | Business News

WASHINGTON – Raising Cane’s, the popular Baton Rouge-based fast-food franchise, has opened its first outlet in the nation’s capital, at Union Station.

As the train station is close to his Senate office, U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, took his staff there for a little taste of home.

“From its roots on LSU’s campus, @RaisingCanes has finally made its way to Washington, D.C. My staff and I are enjoying a small taste of home tonight for dinner,” Cassidy wrote on X.

U.S. Rep. Garret Graves, R-Baton Rouge, published a photo of Raising Cane’s meals being delivered to the Capitol with the caption “bag secured.”

Cassidy said he considered himself a Cane’s quality-control expert. His Baton Rouge home is about two blocks from the first of more than 600 locations that became the billion-dollar international establishment that serves chicken fingers, lemonade, and a remoulade-like sauce.

Using a business plan drafted while at LSU, and financed with a federal Small Business Administration loan, founder Todd Graves and his friend, Craig Silvey, opened the first restaurant at the corner of Highland Road and State Street, a block from the north gate of LSU, on Aug. 28, 1996. He named the store after his yellow Labrador retriever.

The stores usually are decorated with the sports teams in the area – LSU and Episcopal High School, where Graves attended, in Baton Rouge, and the Saints in New Orleans, for instance.

The new restaurant at the busy hub for commuter and long-distance trains is decorated with illustrations from the historic Union Station.
