Singapore shipyard Seatrium has secured a full-scale, turnkey carbon capture and storage (CCS) retrofit from Norwegian partner Solvang ASA
Solvang is one of Seatrium’s long-term favoured customer contract partners and the full-scale retrofit will see a 7-MW Wärtsilä CCS system installed on Solvang’s 21,289-m3 ethylene carrier Clipper Eris.
The installation is scheduled to commence in Q3 this year. The project will use amine cleaning technology to capture nearly 70% of CO2 emitted in the exhaust gas from the main engine, involving the entire value chain for handling carbon dioxide, including liquefaction and storage on board the vessel.
Seatrium’s key scope of work includes basic design, detailed engineering, procurement, upgrading electrical and automation systems, and integrating a carbon capture, compression and storage system.
The two companies have collaborated previously with the yard installing exhaust gas cleaning systems on four Solvang very large gas carriers.
The project is part of Solvang’s full-scale pilot to trial carbon capture technology on board a gas carrier. The pilot will last over a year while Clipper Eris operates commercially.
Solvang fleet director Tor Ask said a successful pilot will mean Solvang installs the technology on other vessels, including newbuilds.
Seatrium executive vice president of repairs and upgrades, Alvin Gan said, “We would like to thank Solvang for entrusting Seatrium with this milestone project and for taking our long existing partnership to a new level of collaboration in support of our collective energy transition goals. We are excited to be part of this game-changing world’s first full-scale turnkey pilot CCS retrofit.”
