STEUBENVILLE — Mayor Jerry Barilla is hoping residents will fill Historic Fort Steuben Park Friday morning to show a national television audience why Steubenville is one of the “Merriest Main Streets in America.”

A crew from NBC’s “Today Show” will be broadcasting from Christmas tree plaza, he said.

“‘The Today Show’ is bringing back a beloved holiday series called ‘Merriest Main Streets,’ where they highlight towns across the country that bring cheer this season,” Barilla said in a Facebook post. “I’m excited to announce that Steubenville and the Nutcracker Village have been selected as the first stop on their seasonal tour.”

Visitor Center Executive Director Judy Bratten said the two-minute segment will air live.

“It’s a series they do every year, Merriest Main Streets in America, and we’re kicking it off,” she said. “They’re going to start setting up at 6 a.m., and we want the crowd to start coming around 7:15 a.m.”

Bratten said the segment is scheduled to air at 8:20 a.m.

“We’ve arranged to have the Big Red band and the Catholic Central drum line here, and there’ll be a lot of school kids here with signs,” she said. “We’re very excited that we were chosen for this event — we’re so proud of our nutcrackers and our community, and this will certainly shine a bright, merry light on Steubenville.”

Third Street will be closed for production reasons beginning at 6 a.m., she said.

“We want to have people come out and bring a sign …’Hi, Hoda … Hi, Jenna …Welcome to Steubenville’ … whatever they want to put on them,” she said.

But Friday’s forecast is calling for rain … lots of it … throughout the day, with a high in the upper 40s.

“Signs and happy faces are what we want to show,” Bratten said. “But people may have to bring umbrellas, too.”

“Today” airs on WTOV-TV and WPXI-TV.
