For the first time in 23 years, the United States women’s national team lost a home game against Concacaf competition, falling to Mexico 2-0 on Monday night at the W Gold Cup. The loss snaps an 80-match unbeaten streak at home against Concacaf sides with the last loss being a 3-1 defeat to Canada in November 2000. It was the first loss for the USWNT against Mexico since 2010.

A brilliant solo effort from Lizbeth Ovalle led to the winner as the Tigres Femenil talent lofted a fine ball from the top of the box into the far side of the goal, catching Alyssa Naeher off her line in the first half.

Ovalle’s goal ended a run of 33 straight shutouts for the USWNT in Concacaf competition, per Opta.

Mayra Pelayo-Bernal then made it 2-0 in added time to complete the convincing victory with a brilliant curling goal.

The U.S. put just one of their eight shots on target after scoring nine goals combined in the first two games.

“We have to turn it around, we have to pick our heads back up and know that this wasn’t nearly our best, and when we are our best, we can play and compete and beat anyone,” USWNT striker Alex Morgan said after the game.

The Americans finish second in Group A with this result and will play in the knockout stage starting this weekend against a team yet to be determined.
