YOUNGSTOWN — Eastern Gateway Community College’s Vet Tech program has received accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association, allowing students to earn their degrees and benefit from local partnerships where they can earn hands-on experience in the field.
EGCC’s Veterinary Technician program has its own Vet Tech Club that allows students to engage in the community. The organization has participated in Pet Photos with Santa, Angels for Animals’ Annual Garage Sale, the Canfield Fair, the YSU Pre-Vet Society necropsy day, and the Buster’s Brigade annual vaccination clinic.
According to Eastern Gateway Interim President Dr. John Crooks, the accreditation validates the program that the school has created.
“Accreditation is a significant achievement that speaks to the high standards we uphold in delivering quality education and training of veterinary technicians,” Crooks said in a statement Tuesday. “It validates our curriculum, faculty expertise and the resources we provide to our students.”
One of the resources that EGCC provides is giving students opportunities to work with organizations like Angels for Animals, where they can gain experience in the field.
After EGCC received its accreditation, Angels for Animals founder Diane Less said her organization is excited to continue its partnership.
“At Angels for Animals, we are committed to building a future where skilled and compassionate techs have the training and experience they need to provide care and support for the animals in our community,” she said. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with Eastern Gateway, and providing the educational experiences their students need to become great vet techs.”
EGCC’s Vet Tech program has three cohorts, and its first graduating class will be in December.
